DAY 1
| Sat 27 Sept 08 | Nyngan . . . heading to the Outback! Our tour departs
from Sydney and travels west over the Blue Mountains to Bathurst and the beautiful
city of Orange. Then on to Dubbo and Nyngan for our overnight stay at the Nyngan
Outback Motor Inn. (D) DAY 2 | Sun 28 Sept 08 | Charleville
. . . going back o’ Bourke! On to Nyngan for a morning tea break, before
making our way to Bourke. After lunch in Bourke and time to explore the history
and agricultural pursuits of this fascinating river town we settle back for our
drive into Western Queensland. We reach the border and the townships of Enngonia
and Barringun, then Cunnamulla and on to our stay at the Mulga Country Motor Inn
at Charleville. (B,L,D) DAY 3 | Mon 29 Sept 08 | Longreach
. . . teddies, Qantas and history! We travel through Tambo (home of the
famous Tambo Teddies), Blackall and Barcaldine, home of the “Tree of Knowledge”
(where the Labor Party was formed). Then on to Ilfracombe and Longreach with time
to explore the Stockman’s Hall of Fame or the new Qantas Outback Founders Museum.
Our overnight stay is at the Albert Park Motor Inn. (B,L,D) DAY
4 | Tues 30 Sept 08 | Mt Isa . . . into the big cattle country! We
continue north into the tropics to Winton (real cattle country!). Winton is about
dinosaurs, opals and Waltzing Matilda; we have time to explore all its facets
including Arno’s Wall (an example of recycling gone mad!). Then on to Kynuna (The
Blue Heeler Pub), MacKinley (Crocodile Dundee’s Walkabout Creek Hotel) before
settling down for a drive through some unique country to Cloncurry. Then on to
Mt Isa, passing the site of the Mary Kathleen uranium mine. Tonight we stay at
the All Seasons Verona Hotel. (B,L,D) DAY 5 | Wed 1 Oct
08 | Tennant Creek . . . the mighty Xstrata project! After breakfast,
we explore Mt Isa and the mighty MIM-Xstrata project, and after some free time
set off west. We pass through Camooweal and into the Northern Territory. On to
Tennant Creek for our overnight stay at the Bluestone Motor Inn. (B,D) DAY
6 | Thurs 2 Oct 08 | Alice Springs . . . a town like Alice! Leaving
Tennant Creek, we continue down the Stuart Highway to the Devil’s Marbles for
our early morning exploration of these mystical formations. They are reputedly
the eggs of the Rainbow Serpent and the colours will amaze you. Then, on through
Barrow Creek to Alice Springs. We do the tourist bit with a quick tour of the
Alice after lunch and then settle into our accommodation at the Aurora Alice Springs
Hotel on Todd Mall. (B,D) DAY 7 | Fri 3 Oct 08 | Alice Springs
. . . doing the tourist bit! We explore some of the many attractions of
this great inland city. Visiting Connellan Airways, Namatjira’a grave and Twin
Ghost Gums in the Western MacDonnell’s as well as Simpson’s Gap and Standley Chasm.
The afternoon is free to shop and explore before we meet again for our special
Aussie dinner at the Red Ochre Restaurant with its fabulous bush foods. (B,D) DAY
8 | Sat 4 Oct 08 | Erldunda . . . exploring Kings Canyon! We depart
early for our trip south along the Stuart Highway to Erldunda, Mt Ebeneeza Station
en route to Kings Canyon. You’ll have a chance to “walk the rim” or stroll up
the canyon before we travel on to Erldunda for our overnight stay at the Erldunda
Desert Oaks Resort. (B,L,D) DAY 9 | Sun 5 Oct 08 | Erldunda
. . . spiritual Uluru & Kata Tjuta! We travel to Mt Connor and Uluru
today. We make our way to Uluru (Ayers Rock) in time to climb or walk the base.
The choice is yours. Yea! We came, we saw, we conquered!. During the afternoon
we visit the Uluru-Tjuta Cultural Centre and the Yulara township lunch before
we head off to Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) for a canyon walk in the cool of the afternoon.
Upon our return we watch the tourists at Sunset Strip, as the colour of the Rock
change with the setting sun. Here you’ll be treated to our own Black Tie champagne
service. We have dinner at the Outback Pioneer Hotel Aussie BBQ, before settling
down for our late return to Erldunda Desert Oaks. (B,L,D) DAY
10 | Mon 6 Oct 08 | Coober Pedy . . . the painted desert and opals!
Off to Coober Pedy, through Kulgera and across the gibber plains to Marla (the
start of the Oodnadatta Track) for lunch. There may be an opportunity to travel
off the beaten track into the beautiful Breakaways, then across the 4720 km Dog
Fence to Coober Pedy. At Coober Pedy we stay at The Opal Inn Motel and are taken
on a fabulous town tour including visits to an underground church, home and opal
mine, then a chance to watch an opal cutting demonstration, and, of course make
any necessary purchases. (B,L,D) DAY 11 | Tues 7 Oct 08
| Roxby Downs . . . Woomera and Rockets! Across the gibber plains to
Glendambo and then on to Woomera. This community has everything except a growing
population. You’ll be able to follow aspects of Australia’s involvement in the
space race of the 1960’s and 70’s as you explore Space Park. Or perhaps a game
of ten pin bowling in Australia’s most remote bowling alley; there is much to
see and do. Then it’s off to Roxby Downs and our stay at the Roxby Downs Motor
Inn where we “hit the pool” before dinner. (B,L,D) DAY 12
| Wed 8 Oct 08 | Clare Valley . . gold, copper and uranium! This morning
we depart on a special tour of the Olympic Dam mine where uranium, gold and copper
are found together. This massive mine is the largest uranium producer in the world.
Then, it’s on to Clare for a special wine tasting and our overnight stay at the
Clare Motor Inn. (B,L,D) DAY 13 | Thurs 9 Oct 08 | Sydney
. . . homeward bound! This morning we travel through Adelaide for our
Qantas flight from Adelaide to Sydney. (B,L) You’ll return
