DAY 1 | Mon 20 Oct 08 | Nyngan
. . . across the Plains! We depart early making our way across the mountains
to Bathurst for our first stop with time to explore. Before leaving, we take our
coach around the great Mount Panorama Race Circuit, and then it’s on to Orange
for lunch. We explore this fabulous inland city before we settle down for our
run to Dubbo and on to Nyngan for our stay at the Nyngan Outback Motor Inn. (D) DAY
2 | Tues 21 Oct 08 | Charleville . . . going back o’ Bourke!
We explore this fascinating town before making our way to Bourke. After lunch
in Bourke we explore the history and agricultural pursuits of this fascinating
river town before settling back for our drive into Western Queensland. We reach
the border and the townships of Enngonia and Barringun, then Cunnamulla and on
to our stay at the beautiful Mulga Country Motor Inn at Charleville. Tonight we
explore the heavens at the Charleville Planetarium. (B,L,D) DAY
3 | Wed 22 Oct 08 | Longreach . . . teddies, Qantas and history! We
travel through Tambo (home of the famous Tambo Teddies), Blackall (for a full
inspection of the historic wool scours) and the heritage cemetery. Then it’s on
to Barcaldine, home of the “Tree of Knowledge” (where the Labor Party was formed).
After lunch we travel to Ilfracombe with its impressive roadside museum and impressive
Longshot Hotel. We arrive early in Longreach for our overnight stay at the Albert
Park Motor Inn. (B,L,D) DAY 4 | Thurs 23 Oct 08 | Winton
. . . cattle, gold and rich history! This morning we have time to explore
the Stockman’s Hall of Fame or the new Qantas Outback Founders Museum, as well
as the town, before continuing north into the tropics to Winton (real cattle country!).
Winton is about dinosaurs, opals and Waltzing Matilda; we explore its many facets,
including Arno’s Wall (an example of recycling gone mad!). We enjoy a special
lunch at the North Gregory Hotel (where Waltzing Matilda was first performed)
and then in the afternoon make our way to the World Heritage listed Larks Quarry
to inspect footprints from the largest dinosaur stampede in the world. As the
sun sets, we travel back to Winton for our overnight stay at the fabulous Boulder
Opal Motor Inn. (B,L,D) DAY 5 | Fri 24 Oct 08 | Charters
Towers . . Waltzing Matilda to dinosaurs! After a sumptuous breakfast,
we head across vast plains to Hughenden where we inspect the Muttaburrasaurus
dinosaur display; Australia’s rich dinosaur history will amaze you. This afternoon
we travel to the gold and cattle town of Charters Towers; one steps backwards
in time, as we tour this fascinating town with its many historic buildings left
over from the gold rush days. Our overnight stay is the Cattleman’s Rest Motor
Inn.(B,L,D) DAY 6 | Sat 25 Oct 08 | Roma . . . cattle,
gold and rich history! Today we travel on the Gregory Development road through
rich cattle country to Emerald. The richness of the black soil country is evident
and, together with the open cut coal mines, is responsible for the prosperous
city of Emerald. We travel through Springsure and past the Carnarvon Gorge National
Park to Injune and on to Roma. Tonight we enjoy the warm hospitality of the new
Explorers Motor Inn. (B,L,D) DAY 7 | Sun 26 Oct 08 | Narrabri
. . . from oil to cotton! We tour Roma with its many fascinating hotels
and buildings before we visit the site of the fi rst oil discovery in Australia.
The debate about the value of cotton and the effect on NSW rivers will continue
as you see first-hand the giant dams that support these massive agricultural enterprises.
Moree is a rich prosperous town that we explore before travelling to Narrabri
and our stay at the Southern Cross Motor Inn and enjoy a unique “outback” dinner
this evening. (B,L,D) DAY 8 | Mon 27 Oct 08 | Sydney .
. . homeward bound! We make our way back to Sydney through Gunnedah and
Quirindi, then along the New England Highway through Scone and Muswellbrook to
Sydney. (B) You’ll return with new friends & many fond memories.
